Teknika Kitchens and Baths has recently relocated to Chestertown and offers exceptional kitchen and bathroom design in Kent County Maryland and surrounding areas. We have been enjoying learning about our new home and its history. Kent County is a peninsula founded in 1608 by Captain John Smith who spent time exploring the Chesapeake and its tributaries. He finally landed in modern day Rock Hall after sailing down the Sassafras River. After his explorations Smith wrote: “Heaven and earth never agreed better to frame a place for man’s habitation,” of the eastern shore of Maryland. It is still true today.
The county was officially founded in 1642. George Washington was known to have spent time in Kent County. However, his most famous legacy in Kent County was the college in Chestertown that bears his name. Washington College, a non-denominational and liberal arts college was founded in 1782 and was the first college chartered in the sovereign United States of America. General George Washington lent his name, donated 50 guineas to the founding, and served on the first Board of Visitors and Governors.
During the Revolutionary war, Kent County reportedly had its own tea party where the contents of the brigantine Geddes was dumped in the Chester River in 1774. Kent County was especially important in the war of 1812. This was because of the amount of Chesapeake Bay shoreline in the county; British ships and Royal Marines were never very far away. The rivers and creeks exposed even more residents to raids by the enemy. Two of the larger events were the raid on Georgetown and the battle of Caulk’s field.
Today Kent County is a rural county but becoming less so as time goes on. It has 265 miles of shoreline, marinas, wildlife areas and beaches. The county has over 100,000 acres of farmland. Commercial nurseries represent the most valuable output in the county. There are many 18th and 19th century homes and historic small towns and museums, and these have created a strong pull for tourists and residents alike. The county is the least populous in the state of Maryland.
Historic waterfront towns in Kent County include Chestertown, Rock Hall, Galena, Betterton and Millington. All of which are home to a variety of restaurants, shops, museums and annual events. These include Chestertown Tea Party Festival, The Dogwood Festival of Galena, National Music Festival, Pirates and Wenches Fantasy Weekend in Rock Hall.
