First let us define what a custom kitchen is so you know what you are getting for your money. A custom kitchen is composed of cabinets + appliances + countertops + backsplash +hardware +lighting that are custom fit to your kitchen dimensions to optimize how you use your kitchen + a custom look to optimize how you want your kitchen to look. How you get to there is usually with the help of a Kitchen Designer such as Teknika Kitchens and Baths. You need an expert to help you choose from all the options and to develop a functional (for you) custom kitchen that has your unique stamp. Unless you want to spend 3 years, working full time, finding and evaluating options, you will not be able to discover and assess what you need and want for your kitchen. That is why there are specialists.
In the Philadelphia metro area, we are lucky that we have the cost vs. value report to help us determine the cost of kitchen remodeling. They have 2 different versions of a custom kitchen remodel, moderate and high-end. The moderate remodel includes a 200 square foot kitchen with 30 liner feet of semi-custom cabinetry and laminate countertops. It includes a double tub stainless sink, single handle faucet, a range, vent system, microwave, dishwasher, garbage disposal and lighting. It also includes flooring and painting. The cost: $70,511. This is a lot but remember this includes installation and an average kitchen remodel takes about 6 weeks with contractors, plumbers, electricians etc. continually working for about 4 weeks.
According to the same report a high-end custom kitchen remodel of the same size and number of cabinets includes custom cabinets, stone countertops, a glass backsplash, built in refrigerator, commercial grade cooktop and vent hood, wall over, and built in microwave. The sink is undermount with high end faucets and water filtration system. There is general and task lighting including undermount cabinet lighting and the floors are tile or wood. This will cost $135,560.
These dollar amounts for a custom kitchen remodel include both the city of Philadelphia and its suburbs. These are average costs, but we at Teknika have found that while city custom kitchens tend to be smaller, labor costs are higher since contractors have less space to work in, parking is expensive and trash needs to be taken away as it is created. No dumpsters. A custom kitchen in the suburbs should be closer to the median within the criteria discussed above.
A Philadelphia custom kitchen is expensive, but I can tell you Teknika has never had a client regret their decision to remodel. It is nice to have the heart of your home look and function as you want.
